The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara issue, Staffan de Mistura, met Wednesday evening, the Algerian representative, Nacim Gaouaoui and the Polisario, as part of his informal consultations with the parties involved in the conflict.
At UN headquarters in New York, Staffan de Mistura is continuing his “informal and bilateral consultations” with parties to the dispute in addition to external parties involved in the case, as announced on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the Secretary General of the United Nations. De Mistura initiated these consultations in order to be able to give an update of the situation in a briefing before the Security Council for which he is expected soon.
On Wednesday evening, he held consultations with Algeria, specifically with Nacim Gaouaoui, who is part of the Algerian permanent mission in New York as well as a member of the Polisario.
In the same vein, the Swedish Italo met the ambassadors permanent representatives of Russia and the United Kingdom to the UN. The day before, the diplomat had met the ambassadors of France and Mauritania.
Antonio Guterres’ Personal Envoy has not yet met with representatives from Morocco, the United States, and Spain.
