Let us be reassured despite an easing of restrictions, Lady Covid is still there, among us, and will not disappear anytime soon. However, it could become, like the flu, an endemic disease. To date, nothing official, the decline of the pandemic suggests the endemicity of the virus, with waves, possibly accompanied by seasonality. The Scientific Committee is waiting for a sign from the government to study the question and declare itself in this regard.
Our specialists have thus hinted that Dame Covid should soon adopt seasonal status in view of the evolution of the health situation and that a good part of the health restrictions might disappear.
For Saïd Afif, member of the Scientific and Technical Committee for Anti-Covid-19 Vaccination, “the data on the current health situation certainly tends to optimism, but vigilance is still required. The Covid-19 pandemic could also, in the coming weeks, turn into an endemicand therefore be treated like a common cold without urgency or restrictions. But the exit from the epidemic phase, according to Saïd Afif, is obviously conditioned by the fact that no virulent variant can appear in the weeks or months to come.
In the same vein, the professor, a member of the scientific committee for the Covid 19 vaccine, said that if Morocco takes this direction, it is clear that seasonal vaccination will be limited to the elderly or those suffering from chronic diseases.
On the other hand, Saïd Afif explained that despite the positive indicators recorded by Morocco, the high number of cases in certain countries, such as France or China, makes the decision to maintain the state of emergency, and this, especially in light of the high incidence in some European and Asian countries.
Our interlocutor finally added: “We are trying to return to an almost normal life. We can achieve this by respecting precautionary measures, in particular the mask in closed spaces and regular vaccination for the most fragile people (elderly, immunocompromised and suffering from chronic diseases). It is important to note that even if we leave the epidemic phase, the Covid will not be any less dangerous, because it will continue to circulate in the submarine.
For his part, Pr Moulay Mustapha Ennaji, virologist and director of the virology laboratory at Hassan II University in Casablanca and member of the scientific committee for the fight against Covid 19, indicated that the decision of the executive to extend the state of emergency until April 30, finds its reason in the concerns of managing the pandemic.
From a scientific point of view, suggestions have been made to mitigate the latter, especially with the end of the third wave. However, he laments that many already feel freed from the restrictions associated with Dame Covid as if the virus no longer exists, pointing to global conferences and gatherings held at European or other level where even heads of state and others personalities present had not respected neither mask nor social distancing.
This image of “global liberalization” should not encourage us to open up too quickly and Moulay Mustapha Ennaji to warn against a relaxation which would lead Morocco towards a fourth wave knowing in this that many countries have entered a sixth wave, due to non-compliance with preventive measures and restrictions.
For the virologist, if it is likely that we should with the right gestures, respect for measures and vaccination, move in the coming times, little by little in the endemic phase, however, we do not go from one phase to another overnight. Vigilance therefore remains in order.
