On the occasion of the 15th edition of the International Contemporary Dance Festival in Marrakech “We walk», The Biennial of Dance in Africa is taking place in the ocher city, from November 22 to 27, highlighting contemporary dance.
It is a meeting between 2 key events. On the one hand, the festival ” We walk “, which has forged, since its creation in 2005, a place of choice in the Moroccan cultural landscape. On the other hand, the Biennial of Dance in Africa, launched in 1997 with a specific objective: to discover talents and ensure the promotion of choreographic creation on the continent.
Its originality is to be itinerant (Luanda, Antananarivo, Paris, Tunis, Bamako, Johannesburg and Ouagadougou hosted the event) and to rely on festivals carried by cultural operators on the continent, the organizers said in a press release.
For 6 days, Marrakech will therefore live to the rhythm of a program rich in Master Class, conferences, film screenings on the history of African dances and choreographic performances.
To reach a large audience, several artistic performances will take place in public spaces, indicates the same source. “ The programming will be turned towards the future ”, explains Taoufiq Izeddiou, founder of the On Marche festival and artistic director of the Biennale quoted in the press release.
The organizers also announce that they want to highlight the creations of 20 young emerging choreographers through the section ” Generation 2020 “. Note that Moroccan creation will be in the spotlight every day thanks to a platform dedicated to young talents from the Kingdom. In total more than 100 artists belonging to 34 companies from the African continent.
The event takes on a special significance this year since it should have been held last year but was canceled at the last moment due to the pandemic. Given the quality of the shows, they will be broadcast in full via the African digital platform Afropolis, the organizers conclude.
