The general consumer price index (CPI) in Algeria recorded in May 2022, an increase of 9.83%, compared to the same month of the previous year, according to the Algerian Statistics Office (ONS).
This change reflects, in particular, the rise in the indices for Food (Non-alcoholic beverages (+13.37%), Clothing-Footwear (+5.67%), Housing-Utilities (+2.32%) and Furniture and Furniture Articles (+5.36%)), specifies the ONS in a note relating to the CPI for the month of May.
At the level of the city of Algiers, the CPI recorded an annual increase of 9.53%, covering the progress of the index of food-non-alcoholic beverages (+14.07%), clothing-shoes (+ 6.54%), Housing-Expenses (+2.28%) and Furniture and Fixtures (+6.30%).
In Algiers, “in May 2022 and compared to the same month of 2021, the evolution of consumer prices is +9.5%. The annual inflation rate (June 2021 to May 2022 / June 2020 to May 2021) is +8.8%”, specifies the ONS.
In May 2022 and compared to May 2021, the prices of food goods at the level of Algiers, increased by 14.1%, observed the ONS, noting that fresh agricultural products mark an evolution of + 11.6% with +18.7% for vegetables.
For their part, industrial food products recorded an increase of 16.5%, with, in particular, +29.9% for oils and fats, adds the same source.
At the level of the Algerian capital, the prices of manufactured products are characterized by an increase of 0.5% in May 2022 compared to April, while services transcribe an increase of 0.6%.
In May 2022 and compared to the same month of the previous year, the evolution of the prices of manufactured products is +6.8%, that of services, +3.7%, reports the Office.
The CPI makes it possible to estimate, between two given periods, the average variation in the prices of products consumed by households. It is based on the observation of a fixed basket of goods and services, updated periodically.
