The Interbank Electronic Payment Center (CMI), indicated that the overall achievements of electronic payment activity in Morocco amounted to 442.2 million operations for an amount of 317.6 billion dirhams (MMDH) in 2021.
In its report on Moroccan electronic payment activity for the year 2021, the CMI specifies that this activity, which includes cash withdrawal operations on the network of ATMs, payment operations with merchants and eMerchants, payment transactions on automatic teller machines (ATMs) and Cash Advance transactions, by bank cards, Moroccan and foreign, thus show an increase of 17.9% in number of transactions and + 15.4% in amount compared to 2020.
During the past year in Morocco, he continues, Moroccan cards recorded, in payments and withdrawals, 429.8 million operations for 357.2 billion dirhams, up 17.6% in number and +15 .1% in amount.
These transactions are broken down into withdrawals (75.1% in number and 88.8% in amount), payment at merchants and eMerchants (24.5% in number and 11.1% in amount) and payment at ATMs ( 0.4% in number and 0.1% in amount).
Thus, withdrawal transactions by Moroccan cards from ATMs in Morocco reached 322.9 million transactions for an amount of 317.2 billion dirhams, up +13.8% in number of transactions and +14 .0% in amount.
Payment transactions by Moroccan cards with merchants and e-Merchants affiliated with the CMI amounted to 105.2 million transactions for an amount of 39.8 billion dirhams, up by +32.1% in number transactions and +25.5% in amount compared to 2020.
Payments by Moroccan bank cards are distributed, in terms of volume, on mass distribution (26.7%), clothing (11.3%), stations (7.7%), furniture & household appliances ( 5.8%), restaurants (5.8%), the health sector (5.7%) and other sectors (36.9%).
As for payment transactions on ATMs by Moroccan cards for the payment of invoices, taxes and the purchase of Telecom recharges, they totaled 1.7 million transactions for an amount of 269.6 million dirhams (MDH), down -17.7% in number of transactions and also -17.7% in amount compared to 2020.
In addition, the CMI reports that during the year 2021, Moroccan cards with international validity carried out 12.9 million foreign currency transactions abroad or on foreign merchant sites, withdrawals and payments, for a total amount 5.4 billion dirhams, up +25% in number of transactions and +28% in amount.
The foreign cards activity, for its part, recorded, in payments and withdrawals, 12.4 million operations for an amount of 14.4 billion dirhams with an increase of +29.1% in number of operations and of +23.5% in amount.
