CMI/Electronic payment activity: 118.5 million operations for 96.7 billion dirhams in Q1-2022

The overall achievements of electronic payment activity in Morocco reached 118.5 million operations for a total of 96.7 billion dirhams (MMDH) during the first three months of 2022, according to the Interbank Electronic Payment Center (CMI).

This activity, which includes cash withdrawal operations on the ATM network, payment operations with merchants and eMerchants, payment operations on automatic teller machines (ATMs) and Cash Advance operations, by cards banks, Moroccan and foreign, shows an increase of 15% in number of operations and 10.9% in amount compared to the same period of the year 2021, specifies the CMI in its recent report.

In Morocco, Moroccan cards recorded, in payments and withdrawals, 115.7 million transactions for 93.3 billion dirhams, up 14.7% in number of transactions and 10.3% in amount.

Transactions using these cards are broken down into withdrawals (74.4% by number of transactions and 88.7% by amount), payment at merchants and eMerchants (25.2% by number of transactions and 11.2% by amount share) and in ATM payment (0.4% by number of transactions and 0.1% by amount share).

At retail, withdrawal transactions by Moroccan cards from ATMs in Morocco totaled 86.1 million transactions for 82.8 billion dirhams, up 11.4% in number of transactions and 9.6% in amount in Q1-2022.

Regarding payment transactions by Moroccan cards with merchants and e-Merchants affiliated with the CMI, they amounted to 29.2 million transactions for 10.4 billion dirhams, up 26.2% in number of transactions and 16 .2% in amount.

Payments by Moroccan bank cards are distributed, in terms of volume, on mass distribution (24.8%), Clothing (10.3%), Stations (9.6%), Restaurants (7.4 %), the Health Sector (6.1%), Furniture & Electr. (5.1%) and Other sectors (36.7%).

The CMI also reports that payment transactions on ATMs by Moroccan cards for the payment of bills, taxes and the purchase of Telecom recharges totaled, during the first quarter of 2022, 0.4 million transactions for 110.1 million dirhams (MDH), down 15.9% in number of transactions and also 10.7% in amount compared to the same period of 2021.

In addition, Moroccan cards with international validity carried out 3.8 million foreign currency transactions abroad or on foreign merchant sites, withdrawals and payments, for a total amount of 1.8 billion dirhams, an increase of 33, 4% in number of transactions and 66% in amount compared to the same period of 2021.

With regard to foreign cards, they recorded, during the first quarter of 2022 and in Morocco, in payments and withdrawals, 2.8 million operations for 3.4 billion dirhams with a 15% increase in number of operations and 10.9% in amount.

Foreign card transactions in Morocco are broken down into withdrawals (40.2% by number of transactions and 49.6% by amount), payment (59.5% by number of transactions and 49 .9% in share of the amount) and in Cash Advance (0.2% in share of the number of operations and 0.3% in share of the amount).
