American action-adventure film “The Suicide Squad” took to the top of the North American box office this weekend, with estimated revenues of $ 26.6 million, according to provisional figures from the specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.
At a time when the world is facing a resurgence of cases of Covid-19, the film which is a sequel to the great success of 2016 “Suicide Squad”, once again stars Margot Robbie and Viola Davis, in front of the absence of two big names from the previous version namely Will Smith and Jared Leto. The film’s simultaneous release on HBO Max has also hampered its theatrical entries, in a context where Hollywood is struggling to regain its pre-pandemic levels.
Last week’s box office leader, Disney’s family adventure film “Jungle Cruise,” slipped to second place, with $ 15.7 million for the Friday-Sunday period, less than the half of his total for the previous week.
In third place is the psychological thriller “Old” by M. Night Shyamalan ($ 4.1 million), followed by “Black Widow”, a Disney Marvel production with Scarlett Johansson ($ 4 million), then “Stillwater” , the film based on the Amanda Knox affair, starring Matt Damon ($ 2.9 million).
Here is the rest of the top 10:
“The Green Knight” ($ 2.6 million)
“Space Jam: New Era” ($ 2.5 million)
“Snake Eyes” ($ 1.6 million)
“Escape Game 2: The World is a Trap” ($ 1.3 million)
“Fast and furious 9” ($ 1.2 million).
