The organizing committee of the 2021 African Cup of Nations, unveiled this Saturday the workforce of its typical team for the group phase in which two Atlas Lions appear.
Thanks to their highly noticed performances with the national team, Soufiane Boufal and Achraf Hakimi have been selected in the team of the group stage by CAF.
The Angers striker caused a sensation by scoring two goals against Ghana on the opening day and against Gabon. As for the Paris Saint-Germain star, his superb free kick against Gabon went around the web, calling it the “best goal of his career”.
The two Moroccan players have been named alongside Egyptians Mohamed Elshennawy and Ahmed Hegazy, Ivorian Ghislain Konan, Malian Yves Bissouma, Gambian Musa Barrow and Nigerian Simon Moses.
As a reminder, the Moroccan selection had drawn against its Gabonese counterpart, 2 goals everywhere (half-time 1-0), Tuesday evening at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium in Yaoundé on behalf of the 3rd and last day of group C of the CAN.
The Panthers opened the scoring thanks to a goal signed Jim Allevinah (22nd), while the Atlas Lions equalized thanks to a penalty obtained and converted by Sofiane Boufal (74th).
In the 81st minute, Aaron Boupendza restored the advantage to the Gabonese. Three minutes later, Achraf Hakimi set the record straight with a superb free kick.
At the end of this day, Morocco finished first in this group with 7 points after beating Ghana (1-0) and Comoros (2-0), ahead of their opponent (5 pts). Both selections are qualified for the round of 16.
