Germany reacted harshly on Thursday to the Russian decision to ban the broadcasting of the German channel Deutsche Welle (DW). Russia’s announcement comes in a difficult context of growing tensions between Westerners and Moscow over Ukraine.
Berlin considered “unacceptable” the Russian decision banning the broadcasting of its television channel and the closure of the office of Deutsche Welle which, for its part, considered that it was an “absurd” and “incomprehensible” measure. “.
However, the media has held licenses since 2005 to broadcast in German and English, valid until 2027 and 2025.
The Russian authorities justified their decision by a retaliatory measure after the banning of all broadcasting channels of the German program of Russia Today. This channel has a license in Serbia and believes that it allows it to broadcast in Germany.
But, the German audiovisual authorities do not recognize this Serbian license to broadcast in Germany. On Wednesday, German media regulator ZAK announced a ban on Russia Today’s website and mobile app.
ZAK believes that RT does not have the “necessary authorization” for this, and it was “neither requested” by the Russian channel, “nor granted” by the regulator.
The satellite broadcast of “RT DE” was interrupted shortly after its launch on December 16, also at the request of the authorities.
For the German Minister of Culture and Media, Claudia Roth, no comparison between the two channels can be made. “RT DE broadcasts without a license” while “the situation of DW, from which the license is withdrawn, is completely different”, she said.
