ANP: Overall port traffic down 1.9% at the end of October 2022

The activities of the ports managed by the National Ports Agency (ANP) recorded, at the end of October 2022, an overall traffic of 74.03 million tonnes, noting a decline of 1.9% compared to the same period in 2021.

According to the latest statistics published by the ANP on port activities, exports fell by 17.9% year-on-year, reaching in October 2022 a total of 22.65 million tonnes against 27.60 million. reported during the same period of the previous year. As for export cabotage (merchant shipping over a short distance), shipping recorded an increase of 49.4%, or 1.25 million tonnes, compared to 839,683 tonnes at the end of October 2021.

Regarding imports, the ANP revealed that they increased by 5% compared to the same month last year (45.45 MT) and amounted to 47.72 million tons, the same for import cabotage which increased by 53.9%, or 2.39 MT. It should be noted that import activities represent 64% of overall traffic, while export activities represent the equivalent of 31% and cabotage 5%.

For the shares of each port in overall traffic (import, export and cabotage), the port of Jorf Lasfar wins the large slice with a percentage of 39.3% despite the 0.9% drop in its traffic the previous month, noting a total of activities reaching 29.07 million tons. ANP statistics show that this port recorded, at the end of October, in terms of import cabotage 536,360 tonnes, in addition to 267,546 tonnes in export cabotage with a decrease of 6.7% compared to the past year, 18 .38 million tonnes in imports (+1.9%) and 9.88 million in exports (-9.8%).

The share of Jorf Lasfar is followed by that of the port of Casablanca, representing 29.3% of overall traffic. According to ANP, the port’s total traffic activities decreased by 11.1 percent to 21.69 million tons. Export cabotage (451,184 T) and exports (5.49 MT) fell by 9% and 36.3% respectively while import cabotage (1.18 MT) and imports (14.55 MT) increased 12.1% and 2.4% compared to the same period last year.

In third position come the ports of Safi with a share of 10%, knowing that the Safi NV Port carried out a total of activities of 3 million tons (+18.5%) and the port Safi Ville a total of 4, 92 million tonnes (-10.2%). In addition, the port of Agadir holds a share of 7.2% (+18.4%), the port of Mohammedia 6.3% (+22.8%), the port of Nador 4.2% (- 1.1%), the port of Laâyoune 2.2% (-5.6%) and 0.8% for the remaining ports (Tan Tan and Dakhla).

Regarding overall traffic by packaging method, solid bulk, including phosphate, cereals, sulphur, fertilizers, coal, etc. hold a share of 59.8% cumulating at the end of October 2022 44.27 million tonnes , a decline of 4.6% ahead of October 2021, followed by liquid bulk including hydrocarbons (Gasoil, Butane, Fuel Oil), phosphoric acids, ammonia and vegetable oils with a share of 21, 7% and a total of 16.04 million tons, containers 13.8% including 99,868 TEUs, 3.6% for miscellaneous, including wood and derivatives, iron and steel products, citrus fruits and early vegetables and fishing, and ro-ro with 1.1% and a volume of 788,402 tonnes.
