The Algerian regime has once again officially attacked freedom of the press through its press agency APS. Still using Morocco as a watermark, the generals accuse the sports newspaper L’Equipe of being under the influence of “Moroccan perfidy”.
After looking for several preposterous explanations for the elimination of the Algerian national team from the Cameroonian CAN, and not having appreciated that Morocco remains in the competition, the Algerian regime directed its attacks towards the sports media.
Faced with the defeat and the elimination of the Fennecs, the Algerian media and officials had announced that they had suffered “bad spells” from Morocco to make them lose, and had also accused the president of the Moroccan Football Federation of having conspired behind the scenes against the Algerian team.
This time, the new attack against Morocco was made through the media. The Algerian news agency, the official voice of the regime, attacked a renowned French sports newspaper, accusing it of being under Moroccan influence.
“L’Equipe, a sports daily under the influence of Moroccan perfidy”, wrote APS, after a report published by the French media on the Kabylie football team, created in 2014 by the Movement for the self-determination of Kabylia (MAK).
The APS adds that “Kabylia has its national team, it’s the Algerian team”, and accuses the sports daily of corruption and of “chequebook journalism”.
“This presumed Kabyle national team is a pure Moroccan fabulation”, asserts the Algerian agency, and adds that “the daily L’Équipe is pilloried”.
Since the rupture of diplomatic relations between Algeria and Morocco, the official Algerian media as well as the representatives of the Algerian State, no longer hesitate to qualify Morocco as an enemy and to accuse it of all the evils the country.
Moreover, the Algerian regime is known for attacking the press, not only national, which it censors, and foreign, which it threatens. Algerian officials occasionally affirm that their country is the object of hostile media “campaigns” each time an article presents some criticism.
In October 2021, the day after the publication by the French government news agency (AFP) of a report on irregular migration from Algeria to Spain, a press release from the Algerian Ministry of Communication threatened to not renewal of the accreditation and prohibition to practice in Algeria and denounced a “hostile and odious campaign”.
“AFP once again proves its hostile prejudices against Algeria by clearly deviating from media and journalistic practice and by depriving itself of the credibility, objectivity and ethical ethics of the profession”, underlines the press release.
At the end of December 2021, the Algerian army chief of staff, Saad Chanegriha, called for “retaliating and facing all media campaigns and hostile plans” against Algeria, in a press release from the ministry. of National Defense (DND), denouncing “conspiracies” and “plots” fomented.
“The strengthening of our national unity and the strengthening of our internal front (…) require the mobilization of all sectors of the State, without exception, led by the information sector, which has become essential in this crucial phase, in order to retaliate and confront all media campaigns and hostile plans aimed at the security and stability of the country,” he said.
