Dutch-Moroccan writer Karim Amghar’s latest docu-series sparked backlash after it aired on Dutch public broadcaster NTR. The documentary returns in three episodes, on the life of the icon of anti-colonial resistance, Abdelkrim El Khattabi, and on this period in the history of Morocco.
Under the title ” Het verhaal ban Abdelkrim – Abdelkrim’s story“, The first episode of the docu-series on the life of the Rif resistance fighter was broadcast on Sunday. The reactions following its broadcast were not as good as it sounds, prompting the director, who is also a writer and teacher, to explain himself on his tweeter account.
” The Story of Abdelkrim is a triptych (three episodes) in which I go in search of my roots. In doing so, I meet the hero of the resistance Abdelkrim el Khattabi and I wish to know him better“, Tweeted the director of Rif origin.
He thus indicates having had ” lots of good reactions from people who didn’t know him and now know him. People who want to know him better (Abdelkrim). But I also receive reactions of hatred, even threats. This is an independent documentary ”.
Regarding the criticisms, Karim Amghar stressed that this did not pose a problem for him, but that it was necessary “Wait to see episodes 2 and 3 before judging“. ” We dive deeper into history and talk about the + Republic of Rif +, the battle of Anoual and the mustard gas bombs. Have respect for the creators (…). Express your comments with respect“, He concluded his series of tweets to close the debate.
“Het Verhaal van Abdelkrim” is een drieluik (drie afleveringen) waarbij ik op zoek ga naar mijn roots. Daarbij kom ik de verzetsheld Abdelkrim el Khattabi tegen en die wil ik beter leren kennen. pic.twitter.com/x8qvVYMBCL

In the presentation note of the docu-series ” Abdelkrim’s Story“, Shared on” Zouka“, A social creative agency, we understand that Karim Amghar wanted to dive into the culture of his ancestors in the Rif of Morocco, when he discovered surprising facts, linked to the hero of the resistance Abdelkarim El Khattabi.
” Now that he’s a father himself, and the first generation is on the run out of steam, he’s become curious about a full picture of his ancestors. What story can he pass on to the new generation of Dutch Moroccans, to their children“, Can we read in the same note.
Why Abdelkrim El Khattabi? The Dutch-Moroccan director first confided, in an interview with a Dutch media, that the idea fell to him while he was in Portugal, thinking of the Hirak du Rif and the demonstrations that took place by the following.
Wanting to dig even more, but on the cultural side of the matter, Karim realized that ” to fully understand the Amazigh culture, you have to know Abdelkrim El Khattabi“.
