Several legends of African football have expressed their support for Morocco’s bid to host the 2030 World Cup, jointly with Spain and Portugal, writes the Kenyan daily KBC.
In an article published on Friday and devoted to the high-level conference organized Thursday in Rabat in the presence of several African football personalities and legends, the Kenyan public media quotes in particular former glories of the round ball, such as the Cameroonian Alexander Song, the Ghanaians Anthony Bafoe and Asamoah Gyan, as well as Senegalese Elhadji Diouf.
All these stars, underlines the newspaper, believe that Africa deserves to host the 2030 World Cup, especially after the exceptional performance of the Atlas Lions during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Quoted in the article, Asamoah Gyan notably affirmed his support for Morocco’s candidacy “because I took part in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and I know that it is such a beautiful thing to play world on our continent”.
The Conference was also marked by the participation of more than 46 presidents of African football federations, the newspaper said, noting that they were unanimous on the need to organize the World Cup on African soil for the second time.
According to the author of the article, the meeting was also an opportunity to highlight the role of South-South cooperation in the development of African football.
His Majesty King Mohammed VI announced the joint candidacy of Morocco, with Spain and Portugal, to host the 2030 World Cup, on March 14 in Kigali, in a message on the occasion of the presentation of the the Excellence of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the year 2022 (CAF President’s Outstanding Achievement Award-2022).
This common candidacy, unprecedented in the history of football, will be that of the junction between Africa and Europe, between the north and the south of the Mediterranean and between the African, Arab and Euro-Mediterranean worlds, noted the sovereign.
HM the King had also specified that this candidacy will be that of gathering around the best on both sides, and the demonstration of an alliance of genius, creativity, experience and resources.
