7.9 million operations for 2.9 billion dirhams in Q1-2023

Merchant sites and biller sites affiliated with the Interbank Electronic Payment Center (CMI) carried out 7.9 million online payment transactions via bank cards, Moroccan and foreign, for a total of 2.9 billion dirhams (MMDH) during the first three months of this year, up 29.8% in number and 32.3% in amount compared to the same period in 2022, according to the CMI.

The online payment activity of Moroccan cards increased by 26.7% in number of operations to 7.4 million transactions and by 21.9% in amount to 2.5 billion dirhams at the end of March 2023, compared to the same period of the previous year, specifies the CMI in its recent report on electronic payment activity in Morocco.

For foreign cards, online payment activity increased by 117% in number of operations, to 455,000 transactions, and by 197% in amount, to 382.1 million dirhams (MDH) at the end of March 2023, know the same source.

The activity remains very strongly dominated by Moroccan cards up to 94.2% in number of transactions and 86.6% in amount, notes the CMI.

With regard to merchants and eMerchants affiliated with the CMI, they recorded, for the first three months of 2023, 41.3 million payment transactions, by Moroccan and foreign bank cards, for a total amount of 18 .3 billion dirhams, up 33.6% in number of transactions and 50.8% year-on-year.
