The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) and the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, chaired by Lalla Hasnaa, godmother of the Ocean Decade Alliance, have announced the opening of the second meeting of the Foundations Dialogue which brings together global leaders from more than 20 philanthropic foundations and international experts in resource mobilization.
In its role as a founding member of the Alliance for the Decade of the Ocean, the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment is hosting this meeting which aims to galvanize support for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for the sustainable development (the Decade of the Ocean).
Thus, from June 1 to 3, actors from Africa, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America will discuss the role of philanthropic foundations in the co-design and use of science. transformational oceans needed to meet the ten challenges of the Decade and contribute to the ambitions of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The second Foundations Dialogue meeting is also an essential step towards the United Nations Ocean Conference to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from June 27 to July 1.
For the Executive Secretary of the IOC-UNESCO, Vladimir Ryabinin, “to realize the ambitions of the Decade of the Ocean, it will take not only a revolution in the field of ocean sciences, but also a revolution in the way we fund and use ocean knowledge. Already, the philanthropic community is playing a vital role in bringing together diverse partners, exploring emerging areas, and catalyzing funding for transformative science that I believe will lead to game-changing solutions that help achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals”.
He added: “By bringing together this group of leaders from around the world for the second meeting of the Foundations Dialogue, we can strengthen the collective impact of the philanthropic community to jointly design and produce solutions that allow us to manage the ocean in a sustainable way.
It should be noted that the second Foundations Dialogue builds on the achievements of the first edition which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in February 2020 and which was organized by the VELUX FOUNDATIONS. This has strengthened working relationships within the global philanthropic community in support of ocean science.
